“To what extent can the real and figural materiality of an image become an abstraction or, potentially more, a spectrum? The question evokes both aesthetic and ethical problems which, in Kamal Aljafari’s cinema, converge towards a territory as real as it is abstract and phantasmagorical: Palestine. While Aljafari’s cinema stems from the observation of an everyday life that not only coexists within, but inhabits ruin itself, he subsequently transforms these images into trails, echoes, smudges, blurs and, in his most radical recent films, pixels uncapturable by notions of the real. The art of transforming the harrowing materiality of broken walls and destroyed terraces of an invaded territory into a disembodied immateriality is the art of reconfiguring Palestine as a nation, which through moving images ultimately surpasses the forces that imprison and destroy that space. An act of defiance. In Aljafari’s cinema, Palestine becomes a shadow that runs faster than the body from which it emanates. Amidst fragments of memories and images of a people beset with the insignia of erasure, Kamal Aljafari’s cinema presents chapters of an unfinished story, all at once personal and communal. The Palestinian director and artist, born in the city of Ramla, in 1972, and based in Germany for years, has created a poetic filmography marked by restlessness, devising an elaborate mise-en-scene with different modes of resistance against the systematic attempts to destroy subjects, places, and the symbolic field that attest to a Palestinian existence. Over the course of his almost two-decade career, the filmmaker has undertaken a thorough investigation into the forms and politics of images amidst their power games, about what is seen and what has been made invisible, among material and memorial ruins interpolated in the editing room.

His oeuvre, comprising four feature films which make up this year’s Focus Section and three short films, is largely affiliated with the world of documentary, although it rallies a variety of different procedures and formats in dialogue with the visual arts as much as the essay and experimental universe. One of the hallmarks of this process lies in the manipulation of images in an attempt to extrapolate their figurative nature – such as the use of domestic surveillance footage from a street camera in his latest feature film, An Unusual Summer (2020, 80′), whose Brazilian premiere will happen during this year’s Olhar de Cinema. From the interviews in his first short film Visit Iraq (2003, 23′), filmed in Geneva, to the fictional venture in Port of Memory (Minaa Al Zakira, 2009, 62’), which explores the gentrification of the city of Jaffa, through the re-editing of film archives in Recollection (Istiaada, 2015, 70’) as it strives to occupy these forbidden territories, each work updates and reconfigures the filmmaker’s path, which exists alongside his family’s trajectory, creating other times and affective dispositions through sounds and images. As in The Roof (Al Sateh, 2006, 63′), the director’s debut feature film, whose title refers to the never-finished ceiling of his parents’ house, the films in this year’s Focus section reveal a never-ending community building process, a sharing rooted in the typical movements of everyday life – whether a house, a street, or a neighborhood – which unites people and remembrances, both present and absent.”︎︎︎From Olhar de Cinema

What distinguishes Kamal Aljafari in the field of montage filmmaking is his unique way of intervening on the materials he is working with. Here the filmmaker uses color blocking (subversively appropriating a technique typically used by censors) and colorization to reject the official narratives of the Occupation and to transform them into a gesture of resistance against suppression and the erasure of Palestinian history and culture. Drawing both on the poetry of revolutionary writer Ghassan Kanafani and on a Palestinian film archive from Beirut that was looted and destroyed in 1982, the film spans over several decades, from the years of the British Mandate of Palestine, through the Nakba and the multiple post-1948 wars, up to present day. A Fidai Film is an act of radical re-appropriation by one of today’s leading experimental filmmakers – and a film that is all the more urgent now, in the context of the genocide in Gaza. ︎︎︎ Visions du Réel, Nyon
In the summer of 1982, the Israeli army invaded Beirut. During this time, it raided the Palestinian Research Center and looted its entire archive. The archive contained historical documents of Palestine, including a collection of still and moving images. Taking this as a premise, 'A Fidai Film' aims to create a counter-narrative to this loss, presenting a form of cinematic sabotage that seeks to reclaim and restore the looted memories of Palestinian history. It’s a poignant exploration of identity, memory, and resistance, told through a unique blend of documentary and experimental filmmaking techniques.

“PARADISO, XXXI, 108” SCREENINGApril 13th 2024︎︎︎ Images Festival, TorontoFilmmakers make the light. There is always poetry in images and images in poetry: imagination, desire, steadfastness, and liberation are entangled into material manifestations of scenes, vignettes, soundscapes, lightscapes, stillness, and rhythm. The films and videos in dreamworlds are thought of as material possibilities in which worlds appear that are made up of dreams; worlds dreamt in daylight, in rumination; worlds that follow an intuition through movement, dance, and protest. Dreaming is the condition whereby forms emerge as relation, as our love for the land, and as liberation: in unexpected cuts, speeds, scratches, interruptions, fragments, blurs, a green ray. There’s an intimacy here that corresponds to the image’s vibrancy, dynamism, and beat. Images are light.︎︎︎https://imagesfestival.com/events/dreamworlds

Roger Koza». ︎︎︎https://cosquinfilmfest.com/programacion/ficic-12-programacion-2023/competencia-internacional-cortometrajes/paradiso-xxxi-108/?fbclid=IwAR06DeIj9gdpIwusGaYVo-9JgprUx9hASAPzwjj2_gDzVkKTFSwXWfePGXs

Aljafari’s new film takes its title from a brief story by Borges, one that considers our collective inability to know God by sight. To play against this concept, Aljafari presents footage of the Israeli military conducting maneuvers in the desert. The material itself is uncanny, since it is never entirely apparent whether we are watching documentary scenes, a staged training film, or decontextualized excerpts from a fictional feature. This aspect, heightened by Aljafari’s precise editing rhythms, suggests that violence is always doubled, a representation of itself. Aljafari peers into the collective unconscious of “the most moral army in the world.”︎︎︎Michael SicinskiThis film will be shown as part of the screening SHORT FILM PROGRAMME 2: CRISES IN PARADISE.

Culled from Israeli military propaganda materials from the ‘60s and ‘70s, Paradiso, XXXI, 108 regards (with irony) towards a “cinematic self-portrait of men playing war”, to quote its author. Kamal Aljafari works here with a network of intertextual quotations – Sebald, Borges, Alighieri, themselves also “found” by the author – to create a conceptual counterpoint to the (fictional – what we see are exercises) images on the screen: “was then Your image like the image I see now?” (Dante). Like in Unusual Summer (2020), the filmmaker uses extradiegetic sound as a means of fictionalization (Silent Night, Handel’s Sarabande), proving his position as one of the most important found footage filmmakers of the moment. ︎︎︎Flavia Dima

Three MiniDV tapes of life in Gaza from 2001 were recently rediscovered. What started as a search for a former prison mate from 1989, led to an unexpected road trip from the north to the south of Gaza with Hasan, a local guide whose fate remains unknown.

A cinematic reflection on memory, loss and the passage of time, capturing a Gaza of the past and lives that may never be found again.

Helicopter footage examines the desert, surveying ancient natural formations and human interventions. Dynamite changes the face of the land. Farmers work their fields. Children play hide-and-seek. Employing archival footage, UNDR constructs an eerie narrative of calculated incursion. We cannot help but recall that Palestine remains a land subjected to aerial surveillance that seeks to appropriate the landscape.

Following an act of vandalism, the filmmaker’s father decides to install a surveillance camera to record the scenes unfolding in front of the house. Everyday family life, the neighbours going to work, and the children at school, An Unusual Summer captures fleeting moments of poetry whereas, in the background, the daily choreography of the Arab district—that no one some name the “ghetto”—of Ramla, in current Israeli territory, comes to the surface. Composing with this visual material of low-definition aesthetics, finely punctuated with sound effects, Kamal Aljafari creates a mechanical diary of a life that scrolls past the window and succeeds with patience and infinite grace in transfiguring a ‘film à dispositif’ based on a security device into a personal and eminently political fresco. “In the distant past, many years ago, in front of this house, there stood a fig tree in a garden, which has now vanished, bulldozed into memory, and swept up by History and Time.

An old woman leans to the young man with the yellow book sitting next to her and asks, “What are they distributing here?” “Numbers”, he replies. In Berlin’s waiting rooms, where metal and wooden seats are nailed to the ground, people arrive after emerging from the seas. Here they wait.Kamal Aljafari’s new short film once again collapses time, questioning the meaning of life in a system in which humanity is reduced to a number and the value of one’s future is measured by applications within grey hallways. Step into this black hole, where bones and flesh have become numbers in a queuing system.
This surreal film observes the origins of our being versus the future of how we are defined. What have we become from our point of origin until today’s chaos of bureaucratic mazes? It’s a long way from Amphioxus, we all came from there.

The Israeli and American features shot in the town of Jaffa from the 60s to the 90s are the basis for the history of a dream. All protagonists are removed from the original footage, leaving an empty setting formed by the town. Thus, the impossible is made possible from the “I” perspective, namely filming the past and compiling a picture album made of memories.︎︎︎Locarno Film Festival, 2015

Walled-up houses, notice of expulsion, immobile consumers in a café, an eccentric individual driving round on his scooter shouting, a sick old woman and her daughter glued to a television set, stray cats, the anxiety of a couple tetanised by the sombre certainties of the future, and to finish, a cemetery overlooking the sea and night drawing in on the terraces. The picture that Kamal Aljafari paints for us of Jaffa the Palestinian is that of a shrinking skin slowly closing in on its resigned inhabitants, who are crushed by fate, whatever they say about it, as if the slow-motion repetition of everyday gestures were their only way of suspending the course of time, of delaying the inevitable.

This deceptively quiet film presents a portrait of Aljafari’s family in Ramleh and Jaffa that hovers between documentary and cinematic memoir, guided by a nimble camera moving calmly but ceaselessly around the rooms of homes inhabited, damaged and ruined. The title refers to the roof missing from the house where Aljafari’s family resettled in 1948, a home unfinished, an incomplete construction project. The use of stillness and off-screen space creates a sense of suspension, of time spent waiting, of aftermath, of lives lived elsewhere. Aljafari’s striking use of his “cast,” his family, reveals the influence of Bresson’s use of nonprofessional actors as models whose performances emanate from their presence, not from acting.

	K. arrives in his native Jaffa after the disappearance of M. Like a lurking shadow, M. would only occasionally visit his family home— mostly over weekends—and would sometimes disappear for long periods of time. The visits he pays to hospitals and ministries in search for him prove futile, albeit for the fact that they drive him into a sort of labyrinth inside the Tel Aviv of today. But this is just one illustration of the extent to which the lines between the real and the fictitious are totally blurred. When K. finds a trace of M. in the background of an Israeli fiction film as he accidentally roams the street behind the shooting locale, the haziness between fiction and reality is accentuated further.

Aljafari ofrece varias pistas...

original, no podría serlo.

In his latest film, A Fidai Film, Kamal Aljafari uses stolen archival footage to craft a poignant and experimental narrative that vividly depicts the tumultuous history of Palestine and delivers a powerful critique of oppression and loss.
As part of the Constellations segment at the 28th Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, renowned filmmaker Kamal Aljafari’s latest film, A Fidai Film, was screened to a fully packed auditorium in the beautiful city of Jihlava. The screening was followed by a discussion hosted by Kino Palestine, sparking significant conversation about the current situation in Palestine.

This one-hour-and-eighteen-minute film is based on lost memories and footage from archives, interspersed with stories of lost cinematic images. Taking the Israeli army’s 1982 invasion of Beirut and the subsequent looting of the Palestinian Research Center‘s archive as a premise, Aljafari uses these elements to create a counter-narrative that reclaims and restores the stolen memories of Palestinian history, telling the story of Palestine before 1982 through a poignant blend of documentary and experimental filmmaking techniques.

Using archival footage from the Ministry of Defense that included Palestinian books, photographs, and films, Aljafari recreates a new timeline. He obliterates the commentaries in red, using bold text for the film’s title, to create a celluloid collage that serves as his voice against political defiance and for creative liberty.

During the political unrest of the Lebanese Civil War in 1982, more than 3,000 civilians were murdered by a right-wing militia coordinated with the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). Residents in the Sabra neighborhood and Shatila refugee camps were killed in cold blood. Israel’s goal was to dismantle the Palestinian Liberation Organization. During the atrocity, leaders from the organization fled to Libya. The IDF later raided the Palestine Research Center, stealing thousands of books, newspapers, press clippings, microfiches, and films from its comprehensive archive. The stories, identities, and images of the Palestinian people were stolen by their oppressors. The film sheds light on these massacres and highlights the loss of stories and identities.

Using archival footage, the director shows timelines between the Nakba in 1948 and the looting in the 1980s. The documentary is unconventional in its weaving of stories from different timelines, compiling his own archive and overlapping it with drawings in bright blood-red color over the images and text, to strike back against Israel’s censorship.

Sound in this film is also an effective tool. Aljafari uses compositions and texts of Palestinian author Ghassan Kanafani instead of concentrating on interviews alone. The sound mix echoes with ambient sounds and disturbing effects that accompany the erratic images, making the audience sit back and notice the impact on the citizens. This enhances the film’s importance as a strong source of archival material on Palestine’s struggle.

We are delighted to be reporting live from the 2024 Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, running from October 25th to November 3rd, 2024.
